ARTIST PROOF

Artist's proofs, marked AP, are not included in the count of a limited edition, but they are additional; copies (no more than 10%).

These prints are produced before the limited edition run, as test prints and are used by the artists to ensure the print is just how they want it. They may vary slightly from the limited edition run.

They are handled by the printer more frequently; occasionally acquiring slight dents or odd spots of ink on the outer edges of the paper, but the actually printing area itself will still remain quality.  And the outer paper is usually masked under a mount (mat) when framing.

The ‘artist's’ proof has special value because of its extra rarity; the fact they have belonged to the artist and its possible differences from the numbered edition; factors that are often reflected in its price.
